Phoenix - 1901
Hey! Hey! It’s that time of year again! No, no, no, f*** the holidays, I’m talking about end-of-the-year-best-music-list season! I find its the perfect time to catch up on the all the sweet new music I haven’t bothered to (il)legally download yet and also inform the 8-10 people that follow me in on MY personal picks for the year of our lord 2009. I won’t be as ambitious as last year when I did somewhere around 20 albums, I think. No, this year I’m shortening down to a few choice cuts of auditory bliss. Pitchfork gave me the grand idea for a top 5 singles and top 5 albums list, but I really can’t put any above the others so I’m throwing them out at random. 4 more singles will follow and then my top 5 albums, etc., etc.
My first selection for 2009 is the dancy, addictive hit, 1901 by Phoenix from their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It was ridiculous how this song blew up and found its way into car commercials so fast I almost got burned out on it. Luckily when I moved to Austin I no longer had a TV to push Cadillacs on me and was free to listen at my leisure. This single stands out for me because it has an insanely catchy chorus and never fails to put me in a happier, dancier mood. Falling, Falling Falliiiiing!
