A conversation with my conservative mother

I was awoken this morning to a phone call from my mom who is traveling to a wedding in Mexico.  The wedding is for the daughter of my mom and dad’s best friends when we lived in Independence, IA.  This is of course exciting since I grew up with her and was very close with her older brother.  The more important news to my mother though was that their son was bringing his “friend” to the wedding.  He had recently come out to his family and they, like my mom, were very shocked and surprised (though I can’t say that I was).  My mom mentioned how strange it felt knowing this since she had essentially helped raise him when he was young.  All I said to her was, “He’s still the same person, nothing about him has changed.”  Now, my mom is a very conservative person and “doesn’t agree” with homosexuality so it is my hope that having someone so close to her being gay, someone she has known and loved since he was a baby, will help change her mind a little on the matter.  I am very proud of my friend for having the strength to realize who he was and hope everyone sees he is a great person regardless of his sexuality.
