OK, Sweetheart - You Let Me Down

Kien and myself went to Beauty Bar for some free rum last night and were pleasantly surprised by this girl’s amazing voice.

After a discussion last night about awful music I listened to in high school, I have dusted off my R. Kelly, Trick Daddy, and Lil’ Zane burned CDs for a listen today.

Oh yeah, I forgot my last album for my “best of 2009” list…um, can’t really decide which I like best so we’ll go with Discovery’s LP.  It’s an indietronica side project from members of Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend.  And if you think I took that sentence directly from Wikipedia you’re wrong.

Japandroids - Post-Nothing
This album hit me just right in 2009.  I think a lot of lo-fi/garage-type bands these days are trying too hard to engineer a specific sound and style, but not Japandroids.  As they blast out catchy riffs using little more than drums and a distorted guitar, I get the impression that they are genuinely having fun as they play.  The ‘don’t-give-a-fuck’ attitude makes their music entertaining and exciting in a way that few albums have in recent memory.  This duo made one of, if not my favorite album of the year, let’s hope they go back and record in the garage soon.
Must Hear: The Boys Are Leaving Town, Young Hearts Spark Fire, Crazy / Forever

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
This is probably the most obvious choice of the year.  Embarrasingly though, this is the first Animal Collective album I ever got (chorus of boos).  It didn’t take more than a few tracks for me to fall head over heels for this masterpiece of experimental indie rock (or however you try and fail to catagorize them).  The songs are expansive and complex in a way that never seems overbearing.  It’s beautiful, it’s genius, it’s epic, it rocked the shit out of 2009.
Must Hear: My Girls, Summertime Clothes, Guys Eyes
sidenote: For unknown reasons, I didn’t listen to Julian Casablanca’s Phrazes For The Young until 12/31.  Had I listened to it a little earlier and given myself time to digest it, it would have likely found its way onto my year end list.
